That's Right...Counseling for Guys.

As you already know...men and women are different. So why isn't there much of a difference in the type of counseling they receive? Ronald Levant, former head of the American Psychological Association said, "Psychotherapy was created by men to treat women."

THAT IS WHY SO MANY GUYS HATE THE THOUGHT OF COUNSELING.

We are committed to a positive counseling experience for all of our clients. However, providing an environment and treatment for all of the dads, husbands, brothers, sons, fathers, and grandfathers out there is our passion.

LIVE THE LIFE YOU WERE MEANT TO

There is a lot that expected from men these days and in many cases, we simply do not possess the skills we need in order to answer those expectations. There is no shortage of pressure to be a good provider, husband, father, and support system to the people in our lives. We are expected to be strong, sensitive, emotionally intelligent, self-controlled, effective communicators, and successful, all the while ensuring that our own needs are met through healthy self-care practices. Usually, one or more of these items gets forgotten.

Most guys are dealing with some of these issues right now. Unfortunately, we still live in a society which stigmatizes men and mental health. Our culture still expects men to conceal their emotions and take on the role of the stoic warrior and yet avoid the dreaded toxic masculinity. This leads to difficulty in relationships as well as an inaccurate view of self. As a result, we learn to suffer in the silence. Sure, we present ourselves as strong and resilient on the outside, but many of us are dying on the inside as a result. This may seem like the best option, but as you no doubt have learned, it is difficult to keep this up for any extended period of time.

As a man, it can be difficult to lean on others for support. Men were never taught how. Many don't even know the language to use in asking for help and emotionally depending on another person.

  • Some try to talk to their friends, but that rarely goes beyond surface deep.

  • Some men turn to self help books or podcasts, but they can only do so much.

  • Some turn to drugs or alcohol as a way of coping, but we all know that is not the answer.

  • Some just ignore the pain and hope it will go away on its own. It won't.

Counseling can help you regain control of your life and your happiness!

At Mind Works Counseling Services, we don't believe that masculinity is toxic. We believe toxicity is toxic. There is much about being a man that should be celebrated rather than punished. Therefore, our goal is to provide counseling services in a way that is designed for men to succeed. We are educated, trained, non-judgmental, and effective counselors who would like to work with you to help you reach the your goals.

Our goal is to bring you into an environment that you feel comfortable in so that you are in a safe place to receive the support and guidance you are looking for. Of course, there are never any guarantees, but many men have found relief from counseling.

Most of the time, the only thing that stands between you and a healthier mindset are a few skills. And, the great news is that once you have learned these skills, you can apply them long after you finish counseling and to many other areas of your life.

This all sounds great, but...

"I'm not sure I can invest the money or the time to counseling."

It is no secret that counseling takes time, money, and energy. However, think of what you life will look like if you choose not to invest in yourself. Can your relationship continue as it has? Do you want to stay stuck in a job or career you have come to hate? Can you really go on battling with the struggles, negative self talk, or mental distress you are currently dealing with? Yes, counseling will cost you, but can you afford not to go? Believe me, you're worth it, and it is worth the investment to give yourself a chance at a happier, healthier, life.

"If I go to counseling, I'll be viewed as weak."

There are still a lot of outdated beliefs about men and mental health. However, more and more men are seeing the benefits of counseling and awareness is growing around men's mental health issues. We believe that if you are willing to pick up the phone and call us, or send us a message, that is the hardest part. There is no greater demonstration of strength than making the effort to better yourself. Honestly, it would be harder to continue suffering in silence than to start your journey today.

"I just can't see myself talking to a stranger about my feelings."

Believe it or not, counseling with us won't be like what you often see on TV or in the movies. Phrases like "hmmm....interesting" and "so, how do you feel about that" are rarely used (if ever). For us, your comfort is of the utmost importance. Sure we have to ask you questions and guide you through this process, but it is more like a casual conversation. Also, remember that you are in charge. If something isn't working for you when you're in session, just let us know so we can adjust.
